Foods to Eat to Beat the Heat

Tired Woman Sweating After RunningI preface this article with a brief explanation on Chinese medicine. In Chinese medicine, many of the pathologies are based on external influences. For example, if one is out in the rain too long, they could develop excess dampness internally leading to such symptoms as arthritis, a cold or a sore throat. As such, food is very important in combating these different external forces. With that being said, it is important to understand which foods are hot, cold, dry, or damp in nature and to consume them in a balanced way. In seasons such as summer, it is important to consume more foods that are cool or cold in nature to combat the external effect of heat on the system. The food list below is not explicit, but does give a good idea as to some different foods one can incorporate into their diet to stay cool during warmer temperatures.

  • Apple
  • Banana
  • Barley
  • Cucumber
  • Eggplant
  • Eggs
  • Grapes
  • Grape fruit
  • Ice
  • Kelp
  • Lettuce
  • Spinach
  • Mango
  • Melon
  • Mushroom
  • Pear
  • Peppermint
  • Peppermint Tea
  • Plum
  • Radish
  • Sesame oil
  • Sorbet
  • Soy
  • Tangerine
  • Tofu,
  • Green tea
  • Water chest nut
  • Water melon
  • Yogurt

In addition to these foods, some other ways of eating food that may help to beat the heat in the summer include eating raw fruits and vegetables rather than cooking them.

One important thing to note with this list is that just because there is a food item on this list does not mean everyone should eat these foods. Though it is warm out, not everyone needs these cooling foods. This is where an appropriate assessment by a Naturopathic Doctor would be warranted. In addition, eating certain foods can cause harm to certain individuals, and again may require guidance from a Naturopathic Doctor.

Bullet-Proof Coffee – The Dairy-Free Recipe

BBullet proof coffeeullet-proof coffee has turned into quite the craze lately with Ketogenic diets and coffee connoisseurs alike. Often times the recipes require organic grass fed cow’s butter, an oil extracted from coconut oil, and coffee. I have decided to create my own version that is perfect for those who are dairy-free and are wanting a smooth tasting alternative to their “double-double”. I should warn that the fat content of coconut oil (don’t worry it is a good fat) is high, this coffee tends to be a bit higher in calories, but does have healthy fats and helps you to get them into your system in a pure form.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp coconut oil
  • ½ – ¾ cup coconut milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 3 cups of coffee (your choice on the blend and brew)
  • 1 tsp sugar OR 2 tsp honey

Directions:

  1. Boil a kettle of water and place boiled water in blender – this will heat up the blender to keep the coffee from getting cold. You do not need to turn on the blender but just put the lid back on to keep the heat contained.
  2. Brew coffee as regularly would. Then when ready to combine ingredients into blender, empty blender of water.
  3. Combine coffee with coconut oil, vanilla, sugar/honey and coconut milk into blender.
  4. Blend ingredients until completely combined and mixture foams.
  5. Pour, serve and enjoy your coffee!

Yield: 2 mugs of coffee

Honey – Mustard Salad Dressing Recipe

This salad dressing is very easy and very tasty! There are a couple of ways of making it if you are not a fan of olive oil as an ingredient. Those variations are included next to the ingredient. This recipe could be used for such diets as the elimination diet, the Mediterranean diet, and the paleo diet; to name a few. I adapted this recipe from a recipe from “Paleo takes 5 or fewer” by Sexton.

Honey-Mustard Dressing

  • ¼ cup Extra light olive oil (or coconut milk)
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 2 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • Salt and Pepper

Combine all ingredients, mixing well, until one cohesive combination. Chill and enjoy!

5 Foods to Eat/Drink when trying to Lose Weight

Girl - Weight LossUltimately, this list of foods to eat to lose weight is a bit more extensive than just 5 and should really include fruits and vegetables of all kinds. A diet full of fruits and vegetables is more likely to result in weight loss than one filled with refined sugars. The following is a list of some extra components to add to a balanced diet in order to achieve weight loss.

  1. Chia Seeds: Chia seeds have many beneficial properties that help them in the goal of weight loss. Chia seeds are a good source of protein, omega – 3 fatty acids (not substantial levels to compensate for supplementation), and fiber. All three of these help with digestion, to decrease appetite, to increase energy, and to decrease inflammation. All of these can be beneficial on the road to weight loss.
  2. Sweet Potato: Sweet potatoes can be beneficial for weight loss for the reason that they can be a substitute for a regular white potato. A sweet potato has far fewer calories than a regular potato and are low in glycemic index. What this results in is a reduced impact on blood sugar levels which leads to less sugar being stored in the form of fat in the body.
  3. Hot Water with Lemon: starting each day with hot water with a slice of lemon in it can be beneficial for weight loss for a number of reasons. To start with it can increase metabolism at the beginning of the day meaning more calories burnt. In addition, this drink can stimulate digestion and liver functioning. This can help to process hormones more efficiently and to eliminate toxins from the body. Some sources also suggest that this drink can be a source of vitamin C, which some studies suggest can be important for weight loss.
  4. Green Tea: many studies have suggested that even just 1 cup of green tea per day can be enough to stimulate metabolism. Green tea can also act as a substitute for coffee and the potential to “drink your calories” through having sugary coffee beverages.
  5. Water: Drinking water is important for many bodily functions in general. In addition, feeling hungry could be a sign that we are actually just thirsty. By curbing your appetite through drinking water first, this can help with weight loss. Research has suggested that drinking a glass of water before each meal helps to increase potential weight loss by 3lbs compared to individuals who did not drink water before meals. Water can also increase the amount of calories burned in one hour, after consuming 500 ml of water.
